SPECIMEN

A Sample, a Specimen, a Banknote

This work is a continuation of our collaboration with Dana László da Costa on the subject of money, currency, and their significance in society and everyday life.

Our shared interest began with an audio installation “Divisa” for the 13th Havana Biennale 2019, with particular attention to the currency situation in Cuba.

The current crisis situation has affected the entire world. Existential difficulties are particularly evident in the cultural sector. The lockdowns of the year due to the Corona pandemic clearly revealed the precarious panorama in the cultural field, where not only artists survive with very little money and resources, but many people involved lose their financial means.

Our collaboration aims to show the adventures we must go through with money in order to reach the goal at the end of the month. A metaphor about the flexibility of money. Stretching money as much as possible. Making as much as possible from very little. The depiction of the tensions that exist between desire and reality.

The idea of the work is to create a spatial installation where money printed on latex is stretched to materialize its elasticity as well as its limits.
