SOUVENIR

Souvenir plays with the idea and meaning of an object that is taken and kept as a remembrance of a specific event, place, or person. In a mixed media work, I combine photography and material: the life of the indigenous Wayuu in Colombia stands in contrast to the reality and exploitation of coal resources on their territory. For the exhibition series How to Stay – a wandering exhibition, I developed the work Souvenir.

Souvenir: Digital photography, coal, object frame 119 cm x 84 cm x 12 cm, exhibition How to Stay – a wandering exhibition | Halle, 2023.

In Halle, where the artists Julia Tiefenbach, Jorge Sánchez di Bello, Thomas Kober, Jeronim Horvat, Eri Hayashi, and Isabelle Hucht met, the exhibition series How to Stay – a wandering exhibition takes its starting point in order to then follow its protagonists to their diverse places of reference.

On this journey, they address mobility itself, confusion through languages, luggage, arrival, and international processes that form the unstable background for all of this.

We look forward with anticipation to the beginning adventure, which will shape and change us, our works, and the exhibition, and invite you to the start of the journey at BLECH Raum für Kunst Halle e.V..

The first exhibition at BLECH was curated by Isabelle Hucht. My work consists of a large-format object frame with a photograph that I took during my study trip (December 2021 to March 2022) of an indigenous Wayuu person in La Guajira (Colombia). The frame was filled by me with coal.

With How to Stay – a wandering exhibition, Eri Hayashi, Jeronim Horvat, Isabelle Hucht, Thomas Kober, Jorge Sánchez di Bello, and Julia Tiefenbach send a joint exhibition on a journey to their places of reference. Hof / Saale is the second stop on the journey.

At the second location of the traveling exhibition in Hof, I used the same media but varied them in a completely different format. This part of my Souvenir series for How to Stay – a wandering exhibition / Hof was curated by Julia Tiefenbach. It consists of nine object frames with prints of the first photograph of the Wayuu, but filled with varying amounts of coal, from very little at the bottom to almost completely filled, with the intention of obscuring the photograph and erasing the Wayuu.
