Común
Sugar as a Weapon of Power
Común in Spanish means habit, general, or common. The story behind a “grain of sugar” unites a whole chain of themes such as migration, colonization, slavery, land use rights, as well as current economic, political, and socio-cultural conflicts worldwide. In the spatial installation, sugar is used as a metaphor, positioned with the symbolic power of a machete and transformed through its materiality into an object. In this way, Común illuminates the historical and current situation of the global sugar industry. Part of the work is the newspaper Común, which aims to diversify and expand general views about sugar.
